In 2018, my life took an unexpected turn with the diagnosis of the final stage of an incurable cancer known as multiple myeloma (MM). This blood cancer originates in plasma cells within the bone marrow, disrupting the body's ability to fight infection. After a challenging journey of chemotherapy, a 32-day hospital stay, and two bone marrow transplants in 2019, I returned home to a three-month quarantine, navigating the delicate balance of a compromised immune system. By the year's end, I received the uplifting news of achieving the maximum possible remission with MM. Eager to resume normalcy as the city manager of Mebane, I faced a new obstacle in 2020 – the onset of COVID-19. Due to my fragile immune system, I retired after nearly four decades of public service, mainly in Alamance County.
Over the past five years of grappling with this disease, I've encountered setbacks, enduring shingles twice and recurring bouts of pneumonia. Despite these challenges, I am fortunate to have good health insurance, which has covered the substantial costs that go along with cancer; however, my interactions with fellow cancer patients have revealed a stark reality – not everyone enjoys the privilege of good insurance, often struggling to meet financial obligations.
As a follower of Christ, I believe that any blessings in life are to be paid forward to bless others. I've yearned for a meaningful purpose in my journey with MM. That purpose became apparent when I was asked to be a champion at the Lavender Ribbon Luncheon to raise funds for the Denise Marie Flaherty (DMF) Foundation. The DMF Foundation is dedicated to providing financial support to local cancer patients and their families. The prospect of aiding local people facing the dual challenges of cancer and overwhelming medical costs resonated deeply with me. The physical, emotional, and spiritual toll of cancer is daunting enough; adding the burden of financial strain seems unbearable.
I am genuinely excited about the chance to raise funds for the DMF Foundation, contributing to local people's medical bills, basic needs, bucket list trips, educational trusts, and more. My wife and I have received unwavering support from family and friends during our MM journey, and now, we are committed to giving back to those who share a similar kindred spirit. Your support can make a significant impact on the lives of those grappling with cancer, providing relief and hope during their challenging journey. Together, let's make a difference in the lives of individuals and families who need it the most. Thank you for joining me in this meaningful cause.
